Sweetwater Mountains, 7/4/14 …

While Cary and David were exploring Ohio, I got to hang out with some of my favorite motorcycle people in the Sweetwater Mountains over Sonora Pass near Bridgeport, California …

Ryan took this pic of me, Dave and Phil on the morning of July 4th … Phil and I had spent three days up at the Hull Creek and Leavitt Meadow campgrounds off Hwy 108 on either side of Sonora Pass … Ryan and Dave joined us on late on Thursday evening at Leavitt Meadow on the Little Walker River …

A topo map of Desert Creek between Lake Lobdell and Risue Road …

My clutch cable on the old KLR snapped on Monday afternoon up in Mi-Wok Village and Phil and T & A Motorsports got me back on the road on Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday we had an epic ride in the High Sierras, touring most of the roads above the Marine base on the north side of Hwy 108, making the wilderness boundary above Leavitt Lake, and then doing miles of single-track along Desert Creek north of Lake Lobdell in the Sweetwater Mountains …

What’s wrong with this pic? No clutch cable! 😦

The water crossing at Leavitt Lake …

Desert Creek single track …

… and a couple pics of the KLR in one of the thousand times we had to cross Desert Creek …

A well-deserved coffee break along Desert Creek … apparently I amuse my KTM friends by bringing along a stove to make hot drinks along the trail … ha. I wound up dropping my poor KLR on a rock in the single track and smashed my radiator fan, which sent me home a day early, while Ryan, Phil and Dave went on to ride Mt Patterson …

A topo map of Mt Patterson, about 11,000 above sea level …

Phil on top of Mt Patterson and a pic of the bikes at the summit …

Phil, as always, feeds his friends well! πŸ™‚

The Marine base and Leavitt Meadow …

We found the Marine’s ski lift …

Mt Patterson …

Phil in the Leavitt Lake water crossing and a view of Leavitt Lake …

Dirt nap for KLR … one of many on Thursday … finally bashed the poor bike into submission …

… and the three amigos, off on July 4th …

Great fun, thanks to Phil for great food and single-track, to Ryan and Dave for being so cool, and to my KLR for getting me home! Ha.

PS: Here is a big map of the route from San Francisco to Sonora Pass … Google says 196 miles and 3 hours 36 minutes from Lower Haight …

  1. Nice shots ….. πŸ™‚

  2. An adventure indeed–I’ll bet your friends enjoyed the coffee in spite of the kidding. —–Bill S.

  3. Thanks, David, I’m trying to learn
    from your example! πŸ™‚

  4. Hi Dad,
It’s true, they always drink the coffee, ha!
    see you soon,
    — John

  5. Great pics and ride!

  6. Hey Clay!
I’d love to get a bunch of us up on Mt Patterson in our jerseys
for a portrait with all our bikes and one of Kalle’s SFMC flags …
    see you soon,
    — John A
