Bou Tharar to Ait-Youl to Boumalne Dades to the Tizzi-n’Tazazert via Ikniouln …

Our friend Ali told us we’d liked the route from Bou Tharar to Ait-Youl we’d like the Tizi-n’Tazazert … we were using a map with a truly huge scale … 1:1,000,000 … and we were just sort of going for it … I was just thinking it would be a short jaunt through a low set of desert hills and on south …

We took the eastern route to Ikniouln, which was paved … we missed the turn off to N’kob and rode right into Ikniouln, which was having a market day … It was mobbed, and we had to stop right in the middle of the village because we simply could not find room to pass through … we were instantly surrounded by fifty ten-year-old boys who just looked at us …

Heading off in the right direction … we had fun asking people about where we were going … one of the joys of using maps, I guess …

Up we went … I was soon disabused of the notion that we were only passing through low desert hills!

And up …

These roads were built by hand … you can just make out the stonework retaining wall supporting the road bed …

We got to the pass, and there were a couple of ladies trying to get us to stop and buy jewelry … crazy …

And then down … and my goodness, we must have plunged down ten times the elevation that we’d gained …

We met these nice people from Belgium, who told us we were still four hours from pavement, but only two hours from a nice auberge …
