A California Memorial for Mark

We made a Dia de Los Muertos memorial for Rita Anne last fall … that’s a bit of the Spanish and Mexican tradition here in California, and the making and setting up of it brought Cary and myself some peace …

So, when we got the sad news about Mark, Cary sat down and made a small memorial box for Mark … he spent some happy years here in California, so it seemed appropriate that we make an attempt to provide his cheerful spirit a place to abide for a bit in this part of the world …

Cary had the idea to include a place for people to leave a note for Mark …

Mark was an artist and a family guy, so we had a paintbrush and a sticker of one of the family dogs … there was an Apple sticker on the back … and a star that lights up with little LED lights when you throw a switch … It came out pretty nicely …

The plan was to find some appropriate spot in the High Sierras to leave it … That’s dirt on my nose … I rode into the National Forest up near Lake Alpine with four of my friends from the motorcycle club …

Here we all are, a bit lost in a half-million acres of California’s National Forest, between Hwy 4 and Hwy 108 … me, Hoa, Page, Dave and Kalle …

Page, making his first water crossing on his DR650 … It turned out to be a bit of an adventure ride …

Dave, at the OK Corral … Dave contributed the cigar tin Cary used to create Mark’s memorial …

We found a likely cross-road in a grove of redwoods … I’d planned to find a place to leave it by myself, but thought better of it … Decided it would be nice to have my friends leave a note to keep Mark company, along with my own note … thanks to the guys for riding with me and keeping me company, and to Cary for creating the memorial for Mark …

Godspeed, Mark, from your family and friends in California …

A few more pics from this past weekend …

  1. What cool thing you did John wish I had been there.

  2. Hey Steve,
Thanks, it was cool of Cary to think of making the memorial, and cool of the guys to help me set it up …
