Aviation History …

Tampa and St. Petersburg are separated by a bay and perhaps twenty miles … the weather is usually mild and almost always sunny …

Getting from on city to another by boat, plane, horse or automobile took hours, so it turned out to be the perfect place for the nation’s first regularly scheduled airplane transportation with the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line. The first regularly scheduled flight took place on January 1, 1914.

Tony Jannus flew the Benoist Airboat (pronounced “Ben-wha”) that was built in St. Louis by Thomas W. Benoist …

Tony Jannus also rode an Indian motorcycle, and later in his career flew airplanes for Glenn Curtiss the famous pioneer in both motorcycles and airplanes … so that was the fun motorcycle connection for us …

We saw this replica of the Benoist XIV in the St. Petersburg History Museum … a fun museum in which Flo, Cary and myself spent an enjoyable morning …
