New Year’s Day

The most poignant thing about any Baja trip is pointing your motorcycle north for the trip home …

Keepsake shopping …

So, today we’d leave the south behind and head north … I had an ambitious plan to be home by Thursday night, so I could run my first meeting as SFMC President … I’d been elected in my absence at the last meeting of the year, and felt it was important to be there for the first meeting of the year … Baja had other plans …

Christine and Jim and Tecate, Coke and coffee …

We said good-bye to Christine and Jim again … we’d said goodbye in Bay of LA, but they ran us down on the long, windy and cold ride to Coco’s … Our plan was to ride to San Felipe while they would stay at Alphonsina’s … To get home by Thursday night we’d ride from San Felipe to the Grapevine and then home … how do you make God laugh? Make a plan …

Where the paved road north begins, we stopped to chat with the Borden Family, Sandy, Terry and Jack, otherwise known as the Adventure Trio … They have a website here: http://adventuretrio.com/

As we pulled away, Cary picked up a small finishing nail in her rear tire, and it was soon flat …

Pulled over at one of the many construction sites (with many accursed nails) and soon had the wheel off and new tube installed …

But we could not get the tire re -mounted … In the cold weather I was starting to tear the bead up and was afraid I was ruining the tire … we sat back and thought … we were still only 12 miles from help … Cary loaded up the wheel and headed back to Alphonsina’s for some help …

Frustration and failure … sometimes, that is Baja for you …

But, it is better to be lucky than smart … Master Motorcycle Guy Slim Jim took the tire into his room at Alphonsina’s and had it mounted for us in five minutes! Yay!

While all this was going on I was sitting in the desert contemplating a ruined tire and a long walk home …

At least there was a pretty sunset, and Cary soon returned with our fixed wheel … soon the bike was rolling back to Gonzaga Bay and a room and dinner with Christina and Jim …
