Mount Rainier National Park

We set the alarm to wake us up at 4:45 a.m. on July 1st, 2011, so that we could hit the road and maybe beat some of the holiday traffic out of town …

Having packed the bikes the night before, we were able to be in San Rafael as the sun came up, and were knocking on the door at the Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes Station by 6:30 am. We met a fellow motorcycle guy on a Suzuki V-Strom, and enjoyed the “scone of the day” along with their excellent coffee.

On we rolled, up Route 1 and through the Avenue of the Giants, Fort Bragg, Leggett and up 101 to Rio Dell, where our bikes wound up on the ground at the crowded gas station when the center stand on my BMW K75s broke and knocked Cary off of her 1999 Honda VFR 800. Very embarrassing, so we just had to laugh. It was beginning to be a long day.

We finally got to Weaverville after a fun plunge down Route 3 from Hayfork. I’d always wanted to stay at the Red Hill Motel, which is walking distance to the center of town; so we did.

Our plan was to head up Route 3 to Weed, and then take Route 97 to Bend.

We were ready to stop for the day by the time we got to Bend, but all the motels in Bend were full due to Independence Day. It was hot in the sun, but we found an Outback Steakhouse where we could make phone calls, trying to find a room. After about twelve phone calls we found a place in the next town north, at the Redmond Inn in Redmond.

The swimming pool at the back of this nice motor inn was calling us, so we put on our swim suits and headed on down around back to jump in the pool … Really the last place we were expecting to run into anyone we knew … but, strangely enough, our friends from the SFMC, Kevin and Kim Tambini were also in the pool, on their way to spend the holiday with friends in Idaho … just goes to show, always be on your best behavior …

The next morning we were off pretty early toward Washington State, still on Route 97. We were running low on gas, so Roadhouse 97 in Grass Valley was a welcome sight. We chatted with the owners, Denise and Duane Boswell, who served us some good coffee.

Duane had a lot of nice old vehicles in his tow yard, along with several nice late model Harley-Davidsons. I took a couple of pictures of the hood ornament on an old Cadillac.
