Pismo Beach Motorcycle Classic!

Carmel Valley Road ...

Carmel Valley Road ...

Hi all,

Cary and I spent the weekend at the Pismo Beach Motorcycle Classic, a rally that the San Francisco Motorcycle Club organized along with the Pasadina Motorcycle Club, with the goal of re-creating one of the neat panoramic photographs that were taken in the 1920s at gypsy tours that would end at the pier in Pismo Beach …

Cary had a work conference in Monteray on Thursday night, so we rode down in the afternoon and spent the night there, and left for Pismo Beach the next morning, taking Carmel Valley Road to get away from the coastal fog …

We made an effort to find a way to stay off 101, but still managed to see a couple of CHP patrol cars on some pretty remote roads … passed them both at 70 mph, but they must have been looking for bigger fish than us, because they didn’t pester us … joy!

We wound up at the biker restaurant in Creston, where we met my old friend Larry Kahn, on his $5K Buell 1125, which he snapped up when Harley-Davidson had a fire sale after giving that brand the ax several months ago …

I think the list price before Buell was thrown under the bus by H-D for this model was $12K, so Larry did pretty well … I think the bike looks pretty cool, and Larry can perform some excellent wheelies with it!

We got to Ociano at around 4:30 and checked in to our nice digs for the weekend, a set of new condos that were set up on a timeshare basis … we were able to rent the whole complex for the weekend … we helped set up a bit, and then had a nice dinner with the Pasadina Motorcycle Club at a long table we set up in the parking lot … the place had a pool and a hot tub, which we enjoyed after our long day on the bikes …

The next day was the event, which went well, considering all the people who attended … we wound up with lots of people pre-entering for the ride and rally, with a nice turn out for the motorcycle show … trophies that Kalle made with the help of Steve and James were presented to the bike show winners, as well as for club participation, which Oakland won with 31 members!

We enjoyed another evening in the parking lot at the condo’s, having a big party … Cary organized the pizza!

The next morning we all headed down to the beach to take the panoramic photo … we heard there were as many as 1400 people there … wow. Hopefully, we got a good photo … I’ll try to post one here when they are developed.

After the photo my friend James and I headed off to ride home … we took 168 east to The Place on 33 south, where we enjoyed lunch … we met Ross who was on a nice, late-model Harley-Davidson, with a flat rear tire … thankfully James was there with his always well-equipt BMW GSA, and with his flat kit and mini air compressor, we had Ross on his way in short order … it turned out that both Ross and James were from Wisconsin, so there was some talk of badgers that went over my head …

We made it to a campsite a bit north and west of Paso Robles that evening, after being a bit lost in the dark … we slept in the next day, before heading north through Fort Hunter Leggitt on Nacimiento-Furgusson Road … a beautiful and justly famous motorcycle road … we had fun straffing the sparse Monday tourist traffic on Route One, and generally had a wonderful time … We’ll see if the SFMC ever particpates in such a big run again in the future … at least we still seem to be on speaking terms with the PMC … ha.

Here are some cool pics that our friend Ryan took:

Ryan is an excellent photographer, and had a booth set up where you could get a nice portrait taken with your bike, and a bikini girl, if you wanted … we both had photos taken of our bikes, as did a bunch of other people …

Hopefully Ryan will come out and take photos at the Sheetiron … he’s generally available to take photos of you and your friends … here’s a link to his website: http://www.ryanhetzel.com/_/Home.html
